Meet Kelly!
Saxophone Siren
Hi! Now that I'm a good few years out of grad school I really try to throw myself into enjoying and learning all the things I didn't have time for when I was a student. So in recent years I've been spending a ton of time watching movies, drawing (mostly figure studies), spending more time with my instruments (guitar + sax), and taking college-level electives in writing & poetry.
Personal Hero:
Wendy O. Williams - creatively, I always have a soft spot for women singers who don't sing feminine-ly. She was also so ahead of her time ideologically; she was a feminist sex worker who was outspoken about feminism and women's rights, in interviews and in her music.
Items She Can’t Live Without:
Hair sticks
iPod
At least one good book
How She Got Into Horror:
My parents had all the Universal monster movies on VHS when I was a kid, and in grade school, I was friends with some of the other weirdoes in my class who turned me on to the Horror Lord & Savior Stephen King. I also loved Gerald Scarfe's artwork. It was fascinating to me how something that was technically ugly could still seem kind of beautiful.
What She Likes About Horror:
I love that horror is a safe place to explore things that scare or challenge you. I love the simplicity of some horror (a distant sound you can't identify; a loved one who begins acting strange; a stationary item that suddenly moves on its own). I love the adrenaline of going on a terrifying journey. And since I'm a visual artist who loves both gross and pretty things, I love that horror is perfectly poised to give us this grotesque, scary (but also beautiful) imagery.
