Meet Sunny!

Gialli Goddess

Local goth mom is unhealthily obsessed with Amityville and B movies and has lofty goals to be buried in Evans City Cemetery.

Personal Heroes:

  • My mum who worked three jobs to take care of me and didn't expect a thank you for it (though she got it constantly)

  • The Polonia Brothers who had barely any money and said fuck it and made movies any way.

Items She Can’t Live Without:

  • Kershaw Skyline

  • Lexapro

  • My glasses

How She Got Into Horror:

My mum had shown me a copy of Zombie by Fulci and I thought it was the greatest thing my little eyes had ever seen. When I told Ron at the video store that I thought it was super cool, he asked how I'd feel about watching some more Italian horror to which I shrugged and nodded because I was twelve and didn't really have any preconceived notions about Italians or anything, so whatever man, just give me something cool to watch.

So Ron handed me a worn out old VHS of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage with the cover falling apart and sent me on my way with the promise of three more great movies in my future if I thought it was good. I cannot emphasize enough how much I loved it (and the three follow up movies which turned out to be Suspiria, Tenebrae, and Deep Red).

I'd never seen anything like it before. The camera work, the stark brightness of Eva Renzi's attack rather than a quick shadowy stab in a back alley somewhere, the proper puzzle mystery instead of the half assed whodunnit slashers have, the wild ending that I came to love in Argento's work that teaches you to pay more attention. It was easily the greatest thing I'd ever seen.

What She Likes About Horror:

The artistry of it is phenomenal when compared to other genres. The way a gialli director, specifically, shoots a death scene is so gorgeous you have to like it.

On top of that, it's the main genre where low budget thrives. There's something so wonderful about someone with no money and barely any skill learning on the job, using anything they have on hand to make things work. I love low budget/high effort/high creativity. It's the most charming thing that exists.
